Reiki

Reiki originated in Japan as a meditation therapy in the 1920’s.  The word ‘Reiki’ is derived from the Japanese word ‘Rei’ meaning universal higher power and ‘ki’ meaning energy.  Dr. Midao Usai  (1865-1926) is credited as developing this system of healing.  It was while he was doing 21 days of self cleansing involving meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama that he was awakened to the use of energy ‘without depletion’ and so developed Reiki.  Over the years it has progressed into a holistic therapy in the West, and is practiced worldwide today.

How does Reiki work?

The concept is based on channelling energy to promote healing.  In most cases Reiki doesn’t involve actual body touch but tunes in and controls the energy field a few centimetres about the body.  This healing energy is channelled through the therapist to the client by using their hands on key energy points.  The belief is that the ‘vital energy’ or ‘Ki@ is restored and balanced.

What does a treatment involve?

A treatment usually lasts for approx 45 mins, and takes place fully clothed on a therapy couch.  Any metal, including a watch, belt and jewellery are removed.  Warmth or a tingling sensation may be experienced along with a feeling of deep relaxation.  An energy shift can be recognised or signified by an emotional release.  This can indicate an unblocking of energies, stimulating the body’s inner healing abilities.  There are no claims of cure or side effects to this treatment.
