Hot Stone Therapy
The use of Hot Stones for a therapeutic effect on the body dates back to ancient times when they were heated on an open fire. In more recent times however the Hot Stone massage was introduced in 1993 by Mary Nelson from Arizona, who launched ‘La Stone Therapie’. A hot stone massage uses the recognised traditional techniques of body massage but with the assistance of heated stones. Smooth natural basalt stones sourced from rivers are generally used in the treatment because they have smoothed over time with the running water of the river. These are volcanic rock in nature, rich in iron, and capable of absorbing and retaining the temperature which adds to the relaxation benefit of the therapy. Hot Stone Therapy can be incorporated into an existing treatment such as Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Reiki, or Reflexology or used as a stand-alone therapy.
How does Hot Stone Therapy work?
The stones are heated in an adjustable thermostatic controlled unit to regulate the heat. Many stones are used in a full body treatment of varying shapes and sizes. When the muscles are relaxed it allows the therapist to do deeper work on the muscle tissue. It is an extremely comforting treatment whatever the variation. The benefits of using stones is greater than ordinary massage as it enhances the treatment because of the consistent heat of the stones.
What does the treatment involve?
The treatment is much the same as for a full body massage but includes working with heated stones. These heated stones are placed strategically on various points on the body, e.g. chakra, pressure or pseudo points, which help to open up the meridians and energy pathways throughout the body. It is a deeply soothing, non invasive therapy. It can be enhanced by using essential oils to suit the needs of the client.
